Advertising, Sponsorship & Editorial Independence

How we label sponsored content, keep sponsors out of editorial decisions, and limit what data sponsors receive.

Summary

Sponsors fund CorporateLegal.tech, and that keeps the directory free for legal teams. Sponsors pay for visibility, not for our opinion. Paid placements are always labelled, and sponsors receive aggregate statistics only.

How we make money

  • Sponsorships and paid listings: Companies can buy a Professional, Premier or Strategic sponsorship, which adds the Verified badge and extra visibility in the directory. See our Sponsor page and Sponsor Agreement.
  • Newsletter and webinar sponsorships: a sponsor may present a section of "The CorporateLegal.tech Brief" or a webinar.
  • Consulting: we offer legal technology consulting services. See "Conflicts of interest" below.

How sponsored content is labelled

  • Verified badge: shown on a Sponsor's profile and Product listings. It means "paying Sponsor", not "reviewed", "tested" or "recommended".
  • Featured or priority placement: placements that are paid for are marked as Verified or sponsored.
  • Newsletter: sponsored sections are labelled "Presented by [Sponsor]" or "Sponsored".
  • Webinars: a sponsored webinar is announced as "Presented by [Sponsor]", and the sponsor's role is stated at the start.
  • Sponsored articles: if we ever publish an article that a sponsor paid for, it will be labelled "Sponsored" at the top and in its listing card.

Editorial independence

  • We decide which Companies and Products are listed, how they are categorized, and what our descriptions and articles say.
  • Sponsors do not review, edit or approve editorial content before publication, apart from checking the facts of their own listing.
  • Non-sponsoring Companies stay in the directory and appear in our editorial content on their merits.
  • We will correct factual errors that any Company reports, whether or not it is a Sponsor, under our Corrections Policy. We do not adopt marketing language on request.
  • Ending a sponsorship never leads to negative coverage, and buying one never leads to positive coverage.

Endorsement disclosures

We follow the US Federal Trade Commission's Endorsement Guides. If we or a contributor have a material connection to a Company we write about, such as a sponsorship, a consulting engagement, employment or an investment, we disclose it clearly in the content itself, not only on this page. Our contributors must do the same under our Creator Agreement.

Conflicts of interest

Our founder has worked for, and may currently work for or advise, legal technology companies that are listed in the directory. Where that relationship is relevant to a listing or article, we disclose it on that page. Our founder is Director of Solutions Consulting at Checkbox, a legal technology company. When we write about Checkbox, or about a product that competes directly with it, we disclose this relationship in that content.

What data sponsors receive

Sponsors receive aggregated, anonymous statistics only, such as subscriber counts, open and click rates, audience composition percentages (for example, the share of readers who are in-house counsel), page views, and impressions and clicks on their listings. We never give sponsors individual subscriber or visitor data.

The only time a Company receives an individual's details is when that person asks us for an introduction through a "Request Info" form, and a moderator has reviewed the request.

Advertising standards

We may decline or remove any sponsorship or advertisement that is misleading, unlawful, or inconsistent with our audience's interests. Sponsors are responsible for the accuracy of their own claims.
