What Your Legal Tech Vendor Said vs. What They Meant

A funny translation guide to legal tech sales phrases, from "seamless integration" to "transparent pricing," with the real questions to ask in every demo.

What Your Legal Tech Vendor Said vs. What They Meant

The phrasebook

"It integrates seamlessly with your existing systems."
It has an API. Someone on your team will need to learn what an API is.

"Implementation takes just a few weeks."
For a customer with clean data, a dedicated project manager, and no IT security review. So, not you.

"Our pricing is transparent."
It's on a slide. The slide has a footnote. The footnote has a footnote.

"It's fully configurable."
Our professional services team can configure it for $250 an hour.

"No-code."
Low-code. Fine, some code. Okay, it's code.

"Our AI is trained specifically for legal."
We wrote a very good system prompt.

"It's agentic."
It sends reminders now.

"We have a lot of in-house customers."
We have three, and one of them is our investor's portfolio company.

"That's on our roadmap."
That's a thing you said just now, and we wrote it down.

"We're model-agnostic."
When our model provider raised prices, we switched.

"Your data is completely secure."
Please don't ask about sub-processors.

"Adoption is incredibly high across our customer base."
Among the three people at each customer who bought it.

"We'll assign you a dedicated customer success manager."
Until the contract is signed. Then you'll get a ticketing portal and a lot of love.

"It's intuitive" means the person demoing it has used it every day for two years.

And, to be fair, what legal teams say vs. what they mean

"We're very interested."
We have no budget until next fiscal year.

"Let me loop in IT."
This will now take four months.

"We're evaluating a few options."
We haven't decided what problem we're solving.

"Can you send over some materials?"
Please stop calling.

"This looks great for the team."
The GC hasn't seen it and will ask why we need it.

"We're really focused on adoption."
The last tool we bought is being used by one paralegal. She loves it.

The questions that translate everything

Next time you hear the phrasebook in a demo, try these follow-ups:

  1. "Can you show me that integration working with a system like ours, live?"
  2. "What does implementation look like for a customer our size, and can I talk to them?"
  3. "What will my total cost be in year two, including usage and services?"
  4. "What can my team configure without calling you?"
  5. "Which of those roadmap items has a committed date?"
  6. "Who are your sub-processors, and do any of them train on our data?"

The bottom line

Vendor-speak is mostly harmless optimism. The fix is simple: ask for specifics, ask for proof, and ask to talk to customers who look like you. That's exactly why we built CorporateLegal.tech: a neutral place to compare legal infrastructure, contracts, and compliance tools without the phrasebook.
