A brief history of the buzzword
- 2023: "We've added ChatGPT."
- 2024: "It's a copilot."
- 2025: "It's an AI-native copilot."
- 2026: "It's an agentic orchestration layer for the legal enterprise."
The product may have changed a lot. The booth graphics have changed more.
To be fair, something real is happening. Agentic AI, where tools take multi-step actions instead of just answering questions, is a genuine shift, and it came up in session after session this year. But between the real thing and the booth banner, there's a lot of room for creative interpretation.
If a tool sends you an email reminder, it's an agent now. That's the rule.
The 2026 Legal Tech Conference Bingo Card
Print it, grab a pen, and mark a square every time you hear one of these. Five in a row wins. (Prize: the satisfaction of knowing.)
- Row 1: "Agentic" · "Orchestration layer" · "System of record for AI" · "We're model-agnostic" · "Human in the loop"
- Row 2: "Single pane of glass" · "Legal engineer" · "It's not replacing lawyers" · "Trust layer" · "Our data moat"
- Row 3: "We just raised" · "Practice-ready" · FREE SPACE: someone says "the billable hour is dead" · "Workflows, not prompts" · "The GC's seat at the table"
- Row 4: "Hallucination-free*" · "AI-native" · "Built by lawyers, for lawyers" · "Our proprietary model" · "Just ask it in plain English"
- Row 5: "Can I scan your badge?" · "Let me get you a demo" · "Enterprise-grade" · "Legal is the last mile" · "Tote bag"
*Asterisk not included on booth.
Honorable mentions that didn't fit on the card
- "Imagine a world where..." (Presenter then describes your current world, but with a chatbot.)
- "We're like [famous AI company], but for legal."
- "Our customers see up to 90% time savings." (On one task. Once. In a pilot.)
- "The platform does everything." (It does not integrate with your CLM.)
- "Let's take that offline." (They will not.)
The questions that actually cut through
If you want to get past the bingo words in a demo, try these:
- "Show me it failing." How does the tool behave when it doesn't know something?
- "What exactly does the agent do without a human approving it?" Get a specific list.
- "Run it on my document, right now." Not the demo contract. Yours.
- "How is this priced when usage doubles?" Watch the room go quiet.
- "Who are your in-house customers my size?" Not law firms. Not the Fortune 10.
The honest take
Under the buzzwords, 2026 really did bring meaningful progress: tools that route work, draft to your playbook, and flag issues without being asked. The trick is separating the products that do it from the ones that renamed a feature. A good scorecard and your own documents will do more for you than any keynote.
The bottom line
Buzzwords are free. Implementation isn't. When you're ready to look past the banners and compare what tools actually do, browse the generative AI legal assistants on CorporateLegal.tech. No badge scan required.
