About the company

Sedgwick is a claims administration, loss adjusting and benefits administration company headquartered in Memphis, Tennessee, operating in around 80 countries with more than 33,000 employees. It is privately owned by a private equity investor group in which The Carlyle Group holds the control position, and it entered the legal technology market through an acquisition in 2025.

Sedgwick built its position from a Memphis base over five decades and expanded worldwide through a long sequence of acquisitions, with The Carlyle Group and Stone Point Capital taking control in 2018. In November 2024 Altas Partners closed a 1 billion dollar equity investment alongside further commitments from Carlyle and Stone Point, valuing the company at about 13.2 billion dollars. In February 2025 it acquired the legal spend management division of Bottomline Technologies and rebranded it Bill ReviewIQ.

Sedgwick at a glance:

  • Founded: Operating from Memphis, Tennessee for more than fifty years; the current claims and loss adjusting group was assembled through successive acquisitions.
  • Headquarters: Memphis, Tennessee, United States, with operations in approximately 80 countries across North America, Europe, Asia Pacific and Latin America.
  • Ownership: Private-equity-owned, with The Carlyle Group holding the control position alongside Stone Point Capital, Altas Partners, CDPQ and Onex as minority investors.
  • Legal Technology Portfolio: Legal-X and the Legal eXchange platform, acquired from Bottomline Technologies in 2025 and marketed together with legal bill review as Bill ReviewIQ.
  • Market Focus: Insurance carriers, third party administrators, self-insured employers and corporate legal departments with high claims and litigation volumes, worldwide.

What legal teams should know: Sedgwick suits legal departments whose spend is driven by insurance defense and high-volume claims litigation, where bill review expertise matters as much as the software. Buyers should note that the legal spend business changed hands in 2025 and is now a small line inside a very large claims services group, so product roadmap and support priorities sit with a new owner.
